Let’s get talking, and bring into light what we’re actually going on about. Starting with a personal experience, recently, we entered the Ray fabrications’ factory to interview them for our Project. We met Mr. Ray, the chairman of the factory and asked him several questions about how he manages his social and professional life, given that we had chosen this as our research topic. Out of curiosity, we just requested them for a tour in his factory, and as researchers filled with curiosity, walked in the hall full of giant machines gazing at us.
While the peon was giving us the tour, we happened to stop at a machine, only to find a worker was below it. It dawned upon us, that he was on double shift duty. One of our team mates asked the peon on how do they sell the shirts post manufacturing. To our surprise, he explained to us that all shirts were distributed to big brands- exquisite ones which we find at huge malls, as per their orders. The brands only had to put their labels and send it to their channel partners.
Visualizing the scene at the factory and the plight of its workers I wondered, “We pay so much for the label of the brands. What do these workers get? Do they earn what they deserve?” For the first time in life, looking at my dress, I asked myself- Who made my clothes?
Sustainable fashion or eco-fashion is a revolution to enhance the consumer’s awareness of social and environmental concerns on the clothing manufacturing sector. Similar movements have already taken place in the food industry now is the time for the fashion industry.
Sustainability, by definition, should meet current age needs without trading off who and what is to come. The significant test in sustainability is the participation of all providers of individual segments. They must be morally anchored and represented, from work to transportation from processing plant to retail outlet, aftercare and transfer of pieces of clothing. The form business has an unpredictable and divided production network that has worldwide reach.
Come, let’s join hands, to look #BeyondTheLabel and begin questioning #WhoMadeMyClothes.
